Comments: Hi Cheryl,
I was just searching
the web looking for information on Type 1 diabetes and came across your paper, The Pain of Being a Typecast Diabetic. My son, Lucca, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was just 15 months old. He is now 3.5 years old, and doing well. I
cant tell you how often I run into people who are completely unaware of the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. There is definitely a stigma about the disease, which has been multiplied due of the
amount of effort that has recently been put into educating people about Type 2 Diabetes. That commercial that you referred
to in your paper bothered me each time I saw it, and Im sure it only added to the stigma.
Its really a shame that the two types of Diabetes are both called by the same name, which leads people to ask me questions
such as, if your son only eats fruits and vegetables, will he still need his pump. Anyway,
I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the paper that you wrote, and I hope that many people come across it when they
are searching the web.
Sincerely,
Amanda
